Cairo: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Sunday evening for an official visit to participate in the opening of the World Urban Forum, which is scheduled to run from Monday to Friday. During this time, Abbas is poised to announce a significant agreement between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas aimed at establishing a joint aid body for the residents of the Gaza Strip, which will operate under the auspices of the Palestinian Authority.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Lebanese newspaper “Al-Akhbar” has reported that reconciliation meetings between delegations from the Hamas and Fatah movements in Cairo have begun to shape the future of Gaza. An Egyptian source informed “Al-Akhbar” that discussions in Cairo have concentrated on forming the “Community Support Committee.” This committee will be tasked with managing Gaza in the upcoming period, with its members selected by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
The source further explained that t
he committee, which will be linked to the Palestinian Authority, will include independent figures responsible for overseeing all sector affairs and handling humanitarian aid in the post-ceasefire era. The names of the committee members are expected to be agreed upon first. Additionally, Cairo is reportedly aiming to ensure that the chosen committee members are acceptable to both Israel and the United States. This effort is seen as an attempt to reposition the factions and define their roles within Gaza. If agreed upon, this committee could facilitate the resumption of regular operations at the Rafah crossing within a few days.
