Beirut: The Commander of the United Nations peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, confirmed that the peacekeeping force is determined to stay in the region. Lacroix emphasized that the force’s continued presence is essential not only due to its mandate to monitor hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah but also because the withdrawal of peacekeepers could lead to one of the warring parties taking control of United Nations facilities.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Lacroix made these statements in a press release, highlighting that a withdrawal would undermine the concept of the integrity and neutrality of the United Nations. The situation has become more precarious with the onset of the latest Israeli attack in early October, during which Israel requested that UNIFIL withdraw 5 kilometers from the Lebanese border. However, the United Nations denied this request, affirming its commitment to its mandate.
Lacroix stated that UNIFIL is steadfast in holding the line and
is determined to continue its mission. Despite the challenging circumstances, including attacks on UNIFIL installations such as a watchtower, the force remains resolute. Lacroix reported that eight peacekeepers have been wounded since the Israeli ground operation began on October 1, all of whom have since recovered.
